Kenya Tourism Federation Statement on 14 Riverside Attack in Nairobi on 16 January, 2019

Statement by Kenya Tourism Federation on the Riverside Drive Attack in Nairobi Kenya 16th January, 2019

On 15/01/2019 Tuesday at approximately 15:00hrs Kenyan time, gunmen breached security controlled gate at a Nairobi building complex located in the Nairobi suburb of Westlands that houses a hotel (The Dusit D2) and several office premises including restaurants. According to a Kenya Police statement, the group of armed assailants attacked the complex in what is now believed to be a terror attack.

Kenyan security Forces quickly responded to the incident and managed to access the complex where hundreds were evacuated to safety. There have been a number of casualties and as we await further communication from the authorities within the course of the day, our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this unfortunate incident.

Kenya’s interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, has confirmed that all buildings affected by the attack on the complex have been secured by security forces. The response by the Kenyan security forces was swift, determined and well synchronized so that within a short time the situation had been brought under control. Speaking at a press conference the Cabinet Secretary stated: "I can report that the country is secure, that the nation remains calm, that Kenyans and all of our visitors are safe and should feel free to continue going about their normal businesses. The situation is under control, and the country is safe.” The Minister paid tribute to the support and collaboration of the international community in standing up to terrorism.

From Kenya Tourism Federation we can confirm that the situation in Nairobi is calm and security is stable. All means of transport are operating normal schedules including the international airports in both Nairobi and Mombasa including the train connection between Nairobi and Mombasa. We are also happy to report that all tourist circuits across Kenya are operating normally.

We will keep all our stakeholders updated on any unfolding developments through our KTF safety and security Centre which is operating 24/7.
