ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK
Lying in the Aberdare Mountains, 10 kms from Nyeri, this park covers an area of 770 sq kms. The mountains rise in the north to the highest moorland peak of Ol Doinyo Lasatima at 4,000 meters and some 40 kms to the south stands the well-known summit of Kinangop at 3,906 metres.
Between these two peaks is a plateau of moorland - gently undulating country covered in tussock grass and large area of mixed giant heath where forested patches of roosewood, St. John's wort and bamboo occur. Ice cold steams, well stocked with trout, thread their way across the moorland and cascade over a series of waterfalls to form the headwaters of major rivers.
The Aberdares are well endowed with a great variety and quantity of wild animals including rhino, red duiker and bushbuck. If the visitor is especially lucky, he will see the more elusive of the mountain dwellers, the shy bongo antelope, the mellanistic leopard and the giant forest hog or even the crowned eagle hunting colobus monkeys, one of its favourite food.
Due to its ecosystem and less visited areas resulting to thickets of forests and really wild wildlife it harbors sites suitable for filming and photographic sites. We can recommend farm houses nearby where people can stay to learn more about the eco-system, agro forestry and research for indigenous trees. We have reserved areas suitable for camping for groups.
